TGIF!!!!

We practiced Daily 5 Rotations this week. The students were in groups for Read to Someone, Read to Self, Listen to Reading, and Word Work. They are starting to get the hang of Daily 5 and how it works! We also hit 20 minutes of Read to Self stamina on Tuesday. Yay!

Thank you to those who volunteered to read to my class for Grandparent Reading Day! The kids enjoyed your company 😊

I hope everyone has a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Reminders:
- No school on Monday, September 3. Happy Labor Day!
- CogAT testing starts on Wednesday, September 5 and ends on Friday September 7.

Today was a wonderful Early Release/STEM Day!

For STEM day, the students were challenged to make a thermometer using only the following materials: straws, construction paper, pipe cleaners, and tape. This challenge goes along with our science standards since the students have been learning about thermometers and what they are used for. I love STEM because it allows students to show their creativity and critical thinking skills. It also allows students to work together as a team!

We also had the chance to go to the Learning Commons and work on making weather reports. The students were put in groups and assigned a season, where they used green screens to do a weather report. They enjoyed being meteorologists for the day! 😄

Reminders:
- Grandparent Reading Day is on Friday, August 31. There are 3 slots available if anyone would still like to sign up! Link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b044aa8aa2fa6ff2-grandparent

I hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful, sun-filled weekend! 😊

What is your child learning this week?

Math: We will continue learning about place value. The students did a great job last week and really enjoyed using the manipulatives for practicing using tens and ones to make numbers. This week we will focus more on making groups of 10.

Science and Social Studies: The students had a great time in Science lab on Thursday making and using thermometers! We are continuing the unit "Me on the Map" in Social Studies and we will be focusing on our city, county, state, and country this week.

Language Arts/Daily 5/Phonics: The focus in phonics is the S-blends this week. In Daily 5, the students have reached 18 minutes in Read to Self stamina. This week we will try to hit 20 minutes! We will also start practicing and getting used to the process of Daily 5 Rotations. We will start with rotations in Read to Self, Read to Someone, and Word Work. This week we will also be practicing using proper capitalization and punctuation by fixing sentences.

Today we went to the Science lab and learned about weather instruments. The students were able to make their own thermometers and go outside to use a thermometer to record the temperatures in various locations (in the grass, in the shade, and on the concrete.) They had a blast!

During reading time today, my class and Mrs. Ross' class teamed up with Ms. Pizza's 3rd grade class for book buddies. The students were thrilled and they completed little books together called "All About My Book Buddy" to get to know each other more. They are excited to be book buddies and can't wait until they meet up again to start reading together.

In science, the students worked together in groups to make posters for the seasons. They were able to show what they have learned about seasons as well as their creativity, and the posters came out looking great!

We celebrated another birthday today! The 3rd birthday this month! 😄
