What is your child learning this week?

Math: We will be learning about fact families or related math facts.  On Halloween, we will do a fun graphing activity with treats! We are also continuing to work on solving addition and subtraction word problems using various strategies.

Science/Social Studies: In Social Studies, we are learning about Benjamin Franklin!

Language Arts/Daily 5/Writing: The phonics focus for the week is open end vowels. In Language Arts, we will be talking about syllables.  For writing, we are starting informational writing or writing to inform our readers on a topic using facts. This week we will practice this by learning about bats and writing about them. We are continuing to do Daily 5 rotations.

*First grade will be having a music performance called "A Bugz Christmas" on November 29th. I have sent home information regarding what your child should wear if they choose to participate in the musical. If your child has been given a solo part, they brought home their lines. Please practice these so they can be prepared for the performance!

What is your child learning this week?

Math: We will be continuing graphing with fun Halloween graphing activities. Last week we talked about who in the class is afraid of spiders and graphed the data. This week we will be talking about their favorite candy and voting between pumpkins and bats. We will be getting deeper into graphs by asking questions about the data.

We will also be working more on retelling stories (character, setting, beginning, middle, and end). For writing, we are writing Halloween stories 😊 We are continuing to do Daily 5 rotations. Today was STEM Day!!! For STEM Day, the students were asked to create a magnet maze game. Their maze had to only have one path from the start to the finish line, and they had to be able to move a paper clip with a magnet through the maze. I love watching the students use their creativity together!

The students ate lunch in the classroom today and we watched a Magic School Bus episode on magnets 😊

- Conference week is next week (October 15-19). It will be Early Release day all week!
